Twelve weeks of supplementation with hydrolyzed eggshell membrane may improve hair thickness and growth, while also improving facial skin appearance, according to a randomized, double‐blind placebo‐controlled study.

The study, which included 88 healthy middle‐aged adults, used Biova’s BiovaBio-branded ingredient at a daily dose of 450 milligrams.

On the other hand, no improvements in nails were observed, according to data published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

“The eggshell membrane, including the hydrolyzed water‐soluble eggshell membrane, is known to be rich sources of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs),” wrote Dr Douglas Kalman from Nova Southeastern University and Dr Susan Hewlings from Central Michigan University.

“Prior research has noted that GAGs as found in the Study Product can impact skin hydration and hydration through increased collagen and HA [hyaluronic acid] levels, by reducing matrix metalloproteinase activity, inhibition of collagenase and elastase, while reducing local skin inflammation.”

Anti-aging benefits

Pat Schneider, CEO of Biova, welcomed the study’s findings, stating: “We are very excited about the results of this study and feel that the significant anti-aging benefits demonstrated by BiovaBIO make it a superb competitor in the hair, skin and nails supplement category.

“Additionally, BiovaBIO will be an excellent complement to our existing topical cosmetic beauty ingredient, BiovaDerm. Together, our two ingredients offer a total system of both inner and outer beauty results”.

Study details

Drs Kalman and Hewlings randomly assigned half of the participants to the BiovaBio group and half to the placebo group, and used tests including TrichoScan HD (hair), Canfield Visia‐CR (skin), modified FACE‐Q (skin), and anchored Likert Scales (nails) to assess outcomes before, during, and after 12 weeks.

The results showed that BiovaBIO is associated with significant improvements on fine lines, wrinkles, and skin tone, which are facets of overall skin appearance.

In addition, significant improvements in hair thickness, a reduction in hair breakage, and an improvement in hair growth at 4, 8, and 12 weeks were recorded by the researchers.

On the safety and tolerability of the supplement, Drs Kalman and Hewlings stated: “Within the confines of this study, the study product (BiovaBio) was observed to have a good safety profile. There were no serious adverse events or related adverse events in this study. There is a long history of use of eggshell membrane in the food supply including in dietary supplement form.”
